Position Overview
Inhospital Physicians is seeking Emergency Medicine physicians to join the team at St. John’s Hospital in Leavenworth, Kansas . This is a community-based ED with a strong culture, consistent volume, and diverse case mix , including behavioral health and correctional population exposure.
This role is ideal for physicians who value autonomy, efficiency, and a supportive team environment .
Position Highlights
1099 independent contractor role
12-hour shifts
Full-time: 120 hours/month
Competitive hourly compensation

Clinical Environment
~34 patients per day
~5 admissions per day
Broad acuity: medical, telemetry, CCU, behavioral health

Chest pain
Abdominal pain
Behavioral health (SI, PTSD)
Urologic complaints
Staffing Model
1 Emergency Medicine physician (day)
1 Emergency Medicine physician (night)
1 APP (mid-shift)
Admissions managed by hospitalists
Facility Details
~14 ED beds with fast track
Standalone Emergency Department (separate from hospital)
30-bed inpatient behavioral health unit
Unique Clinical Exposure
Serves multiple correctional facilities (including federal detention center)
Higher-acuity inmate population
Strong behavioral health volume
Frequent transfers to higher-level care (including Providence)

Qualifications
Board Certified / Board Eligible in Emergency Medicine (ABEM preferred)
Will consider ABFM with 2+ years Emergency Medicine experience or EM fellowship
Active or eligible for Kansas medical license (IMLC eligible)
Comfortable with independent coverage and transfer-based care
Key Considerations
Transfer coordination required for certain specialties
Correctional patient population is a meaningful part of volume
Standalone ED model requires adaptability
